International Gold Cup October
The International Gold Cup October, also known as the International Gold Cup at Cheltenham, is an annual Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase horse race held at Cheltenham Racecourse, Gloucestershire, England. The race is open to horses aged five years and over and is run over a distance of about 3 miles and 2 furlongs (5.2 kilometers). The race is run in October and is one of the most prestigious events in the British National Hunt calendar.
The race was first run in 1960 as a replacement for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which had been abandoned that year due to snow. The inaugural race was won by the Queen Mother’s horse, Devon Loch, who famously fell at the last fence when seemingly certain to win.
The race has been won by some of the greatest horses in National Hunt history, including Arkle, Mill Reef, Dawn Run, and Desert Orchid. In recent years, the race has been dominated by Irish horses, with eight of the last ten winners coming from Ireland.
The International Gold Cup October is a major event in the British racing calendar and attracts a huge crowd to Cheltenham Racecourse. The race is a test of speed, stamina, and jumping ability, and is one of the most challenging races in the world.
