Gold Prices Surge Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
(Yahoo News, International) – Gold prices have spiked to a six-month high on Tuesday, driven by rising demand as investors seek safe-haven assets amid escalating global economic uncertainty.
The spot gold price hit $1,870 per ounce, its highest level since June 2022. Gold futures for February delivery on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange also climbed, reaching $1,885.50 per ounce.
Analysts attribute the surge in gold demand to several factors, including:
1. Rising Inflation Concerns: Inflationary pressures remain elevated worldwide, eroding the purchasing power of currencies. Investors are flocking to gold as a hedge against inflation, as it retains its value over time.
2. Economic Recession Fears: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the global economy is on the brink of a recession, prompting investors to seek safe-haven assets. Gold has historically outperformed during economic downturns.
3. Geopolitical Tensions: The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and escalating tensions between the United States and China are creating market volatility. Investors view gold as a safe haven during geopolitical crises.
4. Central Bank Purchases: Central banks around the world are increasing their gold reserves, which has further boosted demand. Central banks see gold as a stable asset that can diversify their portfolios.
“Gold is benefiting from its safe-haven status in a period of heightened uncertainty,” said Howie Lee, an economist at OCBC Bank. “Investors are seeking protection against inflation, recession fears, and geopolitical risks.”
Analysts expect gold prices to remain elevated in the short term. However, they caution that a significant decline in inflation or de-escalation of geopolitical tensions could lead to a pullback in gold prices.
“Gold is a long-term store of value, but it can also be volatile in the short term,” said Matt Simpson, a senior analyst at City Index. “Investors should consider their investment horizon and risk tolerance before allocating funds to gold.”
