International Gold Key Comics
International Gold Key Comics was an American comic book company that published comics featuring licensed characters from popular television shows, movies, and literary works. The company was founded in 1962 as a subsidiary of Western Publishing, which also published the popular Dell Comics line.
Gold Key Comics quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality comics that faithfully adapted their source material. Some of the most popular titles published by Gold Key included:
* “Star Trek”
* “The Twilight Zone”
* “The Lone Ranger”
* “The Green Hornet”
* “Lassie”
* “Mr. Magoo”
* “The Archie Show”
Gold Key Comics also published a number of original titles, including the superhero comic “Magnus, Robot Fighter” and the horror comic “Creepy.” These titles were often more experimental than the licensed comics, and they helped to establish Gold Key as a publisher of innovative and imaginative comics.
In the 1970s, Gold Key Comics began to decline. The company’s sales fell due to the rise of Marvel Comics and DC Comics, and Western Publishing decided to close down the company in 1984.
Despite its brief existence, Gold Key Comics made a significant contribution to the history of American comics. The company’s licensed comics helped to popularize television and movie characters, and its original titles helped to push the boundaries of the comics medium. Gold Key Comics is remembered today as one of the most important and influential comic book publishers of the 1960s and 1970s.
