International Gold Key Comics
International Gold Key Comics was an American comic book publisher that operated from 1962 to 1984. It was a subsidiary of Western Publishing, which also published Dell Comics and Whitman Comics. Gold Key Comics was known for its licensed comic books based on popular television shows, movies, and cartoon characters, such as “The Twilight Zone,” “Star Trek,” “The Flintstones,” and “The Jetsons.”
Gold Key Comics was founded by Harry Donenfeld, who had been the publisher of DC Comics. Donenfeld left DC in 1961 and founded Gold Key Comics the following year. The company’s first comic book was “Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories,” which featured stories based on the characters created by Walt Disney. Gold Key Comics quickly expanded its line of licensed comic books, and by the mid-1960s, it was publishing over 50 different titles.
Gold Key Comics was a major publisher of horror comics in the 1960s and 1970s. The company’s horror titles included “Boris Karloff’s Tales of Mystery,” “Eerie,” and “Creepy.” Gold Key Comics also published a number of science fiction and fantasy comics, such as “Star Trek,” “Doctor Who,” and “Planet of the Apes.”
In the 1980s, Gold Key Comics began to decline. The company lost many of its licenses, and its sales declined. In 1984, Gold Key Comics was sold to Charlton Comics. Charlton Comics continued to publish Gold Key Comics titles for a few years, but the company eventually went bankrupt in 1991.
